Essay for final exam Far from the Madding Crowds by Thomas Hardy This book contains several different attitudes of love which are employed by the four main characters. The story begins with the rashness of Oak・s proposal and then followed the excessive self-importance of Bathsheba, also associated with Boldwood・s obsession and Troy・s mutability. By tracing the process of the relationships between Oak and Bathsheba, I think that Hardy employed a unique and subtle metaphor to tell the readers the ways by which a true love (appeared in the ending) can be developed and formed. That is developing a true love is like raising sheep.
