On Tuesday September 30, 2003 I had the wonderful opportunity to go and listen in on a presentation by Dr. Susan Weinberger or you can also call her Dr. Mentor. Dr Weinburger started out as a school administrator and now is the founder and president of the ‘Mentor Consulting Group’ in North Connecticut. She is traveling all across Canada and the United States to spread the awareness of mentoring, she noted that none of this would have been possible if it weren’t for the caring generosity for Edulinx that has been there for her and endorsed the funding for her to travel and spread the awareness of mentoring. Dr. Weinberger described mentoring as, “a relationship between a caring adult and a child that will benefit from the relationship.” She also describes mentoring as, “selfish, it not only helps a child but also fulfills your heart.” Dr. Weinberger classified mentoring as a formal program. She said it is classified as a formal program because there is a long-term relationship; there is a minimal time requirement (at least one hour per week), as well as a screening and matching process to ensure the safety and compatibility of the mentor and mentoree. One hour a week is nothing to give when you look at the positive effects that just one hour a week can have on someone who is in desperate need of a positive influential source in their lives. Someone they can look up to and ask for guidance. Dr. Weinberger quoted that, “Children are starving, starving for attention.” and mentoring is the first step for these children to possibly being on the road to many successes. Dr. Weinberger also touched based on the notion that four things are needed in order for kids to be successful: 1. Time 2. Action 3. Consistency 4. Truth Along with these is also a list of recommended qualifications for the mentor to have in order to succeed in their ultimate goal. 1. Caring 2. Patience 3. No involvement in activities that could jeopardize your position as a positive role model figure 4. Commitment 5. Honesty For information purposes there have been pre and post evaluation tests conducted to judge the progress and effectiveness of mentoring.
