Information Audit

What is an Information audit?

There are many different types of existing audits: finical audit, business audit, communications audit. The audit less commonly know is the information audit it defined by said by Buchanan and Gibb

“The process of discovering, monitoring and evaluating an organisation’s information flows and resources in order to implement, maintain or improve an organisation’s management of information”

In this case study I have been asked to look at a UK plant that is developing a system that will co-ordinate all the various types of information needs by a consumer bureau. An information audit will be conducted into possible new systems and into the way information is structured and indexed.

What is information Cortez & Kazlauskas, 1998

“Information is the raw material that must be transformed into the human mind by a cognitive process to become knowledge which is needed for problem solving, decision-making, strategic planning, management of change, and creativity”

A Information audit is to be carried out looking at introducing new systems in which would enable customers enquiries to be answered in a much more efficient way not relaying on staffs knowledge of where the information is relevant to the enquire.

A large amount of the information that the consumer bureau needs is a paper based systems, paper based systems are expensive to store and retrieval is slow. By carrying out an information audit it will enable us to introduce new systems for the consumer bureau staff enabling them to carry out there duties more efficiently and effectively other benefits from an information audit are it will save real time and money and will avoid information overload.
