Girl Interrupted, an emotional journey with the lead character, Susanna Kaysen, proves that we are all on the “borderline” of having an emotional breakdown. Who hasn’t been depressed and not known exactly why? Who hasn’t stared out into space, not realizing that you have, until after you have stared at the same spot on the wall for 20 minutes? Who hasn’t wanted to abscond from all responsibilities in life? Everyone feels a little crazy sometimes, and this book reminds us that what makes us crazy is crossing the line; the line of not just being depressed, or dazed, or apathetic, but the line of wanting to live. Susanna crossed the line. She did this by taking a bottle of aspirin, but soon enough realized that death is not what she really wanted. “I called him up, said I was going to kill myself, left the phone off the hook, took my fifty aspirin, and realized it was a mistake.” (37) This lands her in the local mental hospital with some not so run-of-the-mill people.
