Nick Bentley English/Pepin Time Throughout the story of the sound and the fury many of the characters, are frequently getting caught on the subject. Each of the characters in the story has a special relationship time. Whether it be from the simple mention of time, perception of time, or the mentioning of clocks, almost every character in the story is in one way or another associated to time, and its repercussions. In the first section of the book, we are introduced to Benjy. Benjy is a semi-retarded child who is more often then not kind of there. In April 1928 Benjy is turning thirty-three. He is at the age where he is physically, a grown man but internally he has the mental capacity of a child. Along with this, there is no evidence, that Benjy can actually talk based on the fact that the reader is never told by he or anyone else that he can. Because of this he is forced to live through spur of the moment feelings causing him to develop a since of timelessness in which he is eternally stuck in the immediate present. Due to the fact that Benjy is stuck in the present he is unable to grasp many subjects. When the golfers stand on the other side of the fence yelling, “Caddie,” Benjy begins to moan. When he begins to moan T.P. tells him “You can’t do no good looking through that gate, Miss Caddy done gone long ways away.” Because eof his sense of timelessness, Benjy still finds himself waiting at the gate for Caddy to come home, when she left 18 years earlier. What the timelessness does for Benjy is that he is unable to remember when things have happened, but instead simply remembers how he felt whenever the particular event actually occurred. Quentin is by far the brightest Compton child. After selling off a large portion of their farm in order to send him to Harvard Quentin has the hopes of his family, followed by great expectations.
