In the The Cask of Amontillado, Edgar Allan Poe writes a horror story of revenge and death. The story is set it in a Gothic crypt and is recited to us fifty years after the event, so we know the crime would have gone undiscovered if it were it not for this confession. The narrator, Montresor, tells us how he was motivated by an overwhelming feeling of revenge because of an insult by Fortunato. To gain his vengeance, Montresor lures Fortunato into the underground burial vault and wine cellar. The story takes place during the carnival season when the streets are filled with intoxicated, costumed revelers.
