The films Alien and Terminator 2 can both be classed as thriller films and I have selected these two to discuss the audience expectations built up in the first five minutes of both films. ... Many audience expectations are set up during films and the start of a film is where most of these occur. This makes the opening of a film vital in making the audience interested and giving them the right impression of the film. ... The opening of a film allows the scene to be set and the audience to make their own impressions on the film as opposed to what they would have heard from reviews or word of mouth for example. Alien was released in 1979 and Terminator 2 in 1991, the age of the films seems clear by the opening of the films and the audience expectations may be affected by this which I will now look at.
The first opportunity for the audience to get an impression of the film is during the opening shot of the film, this is therefore important and must create the right impression to the audience. The opening shot of Alien shows space, the audience sees stars and a planet. The shot is presumably used to set the scene and also hint at the genre and location of the movie, in this case there are elements of a sci-fi film due to the space setting and other images seen in the first shot. ...
From the start of Terminator 2 the audience expects that the film will be typical of a thriller and a sci-fi film, this is due to the opening sequence and the iconography involved. The setting is dark and mysterious therefore representing to the audience that the scene is threatening and dangerous, this is confirmed by the fight that follows.
