My Dearest Dad, I am here, and wondering where the time has gone. It was only yesterday that you built my swing and fixed my bike. It was only yesterday that you eased my sorrow and took my troubles as your own. It was only yesterday that I kissed you goodnight in my childish way, blowing bubbles on your cheek, and then skipping off to bed, giggling in all of my childish play. It was only yesterday that I handed you every jar that I could not open, and drove you near mad with my endless questions of "why?" to everything. It was only yesterday that you sat up with me all night in the midst of my childhood illness. You, who left your warm bed, to call the doctor and go to the all-night pharmacy, to sit with me till I was better. When it was so bad, you always sent me flowers in the hospital. Do you know how much better I felt when I opened my eyes to see those long stemmed roses, staring back at me in my sick bed? And yet you never said a word when you got no sleep, taking care of me when Mom was too drunk to give a damn. It was you I came to when I skinned my knee or my brother bloodied my nose. When you had to travel, you always brought me presents. It usually was a stuffed animal and jewelry, maybe a postcard or two.
