Saint of the Gutters I. There are many in the world dying for a piece of bread, but many more dying for a little love. The poverty in the West is not only a poverty of loneliness, but also of spirituality. There’s a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God.”- Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was a living saint, drawing both rich and poor to her side and to the message of God. She knew at a very young age that she was to care for the poor, but it wasn’t until her later years that she set up one of the most successful missionaries of today, the Missionaries of Charity. Her life was not her own; it was dedicated to God and to those suffering in the world’s streets. II. Her Early Life A. Mother Teresa was born on August 27th, 1910 in what is now Skopje Macedonia of Albanian parents. B. Her birth name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. C. Family 1. Agnes’ father, Nikola, was a prosperous construction contractor. 2. Agnes’ mother, Drana, was a housewife. 3. She had two older siblings. a. A brother, Lazar, who was two years older than her. b. And a sister, Aga, who was five years older than her. 4. Agnes’ parents were deeply religious Catholics. a. They gave money to the church. b. And they helped the poor find food and shelter. c. When she was twelve years old she started to consider becoming a nun and working overseas as a missionary. 5. In 1919, Agnes’ father suddenly died, leaving her mother to support them. a. She became a seamstress, making clothes for wealthy Skopje women. b. Although they had little, Agnes’ mother still donated money to charity and invited the poor into their home. c. Agnes’ never saw her mother and sister after she left home. They died before she got a chance to. III. The Beginning of a Saint A. At the age of 18, Agnes joined the Sisters of Loreto’s convent in Ireland.
