Outline some of the main differences between quantitative and qualitative research methods.
When investigating a certain issue there are a number of different methods
that one can use to gather the necessary data. These methods branch off into two
categories- quantitative and qualitative.
“Quantitative research involves the collection and presentation of numerical data which
can be codified and subjected to detailed statistical testing.”(MarshI, 2000, p135)
Qualitative is the alternative branch of research methods and is closely related
to ethnography (Silverman D). ...
Quantitative research generally involves the use of surveys. Surveys enable the
research of a large range of participants. ...
Qualitative research differs in its approach from quantitative methods.
Qualitative research takes a much more in depth look at the participants but on a much
smaller scale. ... Unlike quantitative research information gathered can be very
complex and difficult to convey in results.
On the contrary to quantitative research the participant is not anonymous. ...
On the time scale qualitative methods can be very time consuming. ... Due to the emphasis on time,
observation can be a costly method of research compared to the quantitative method of
questionnaires.
Quantitative research differs in many ways to qualitative research.
Quantitative methods tend to be impersonal.
