Faustus soliloquoy at the start, when he runs through the subjects is an example of self-bettering. Medicine and physics are indeed rooted in traditional thinking, but Marlowe shows Faustus as not content with this, as shown when he pushes them aside, which represents the idea of wanting to challenge the status quo.
