The institution of slavery in the United States was a long standing Southern tradition propped up by multiple factors. Freedom of millions of people was sacrificed for a strong economy, racism helped people justify and continue the legacy of slavery, and the North’s desire for a united nation gave the South the leverage it needed to keep slavery in existence. These three factors were also great influences on the evolution of the institution from 1750 to 1850.
The desire to keep the economy expanding was a major cause of the evolution of slavery. ... This strategic disadvantage gave the institution of slavery to flourish in the southern portion of the United States.
However, the mindset of racism was not confined to the South, and was another reason why slavery was allowed to continue.
