In the novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, the main character, Huck is a bit of a misfit. Huck never has a family or any strong parental figures in his life, with the exception of Widow Douglas and, if you can consider him a parental figure, Pap Finn. Throughout the novel, Huck looks for family like structure and companionship; he finds this in several characters he meets along his story.
The major source of parental guidance for Huck is Jim, a runaway slave who Huck has known for most of his life. When Huck finds Jim on Jackson’s island, he doesn’t question what Jim is doing there or why Jim is there, he’s just happy to see a familiar face, as proved when Huck gleefully exclaims “it was Miss Watson’s Jim!
