This is one of the poems that made Plath famous, written during the last half year of her life, before she committed suicide at age 31. In this poem, a 30 year-old woman describes her three suicide attempts. She compares herself to a cat with nine lives and to a concentration camp victim; with the lines yet "dying / is an art . . . / I do it exceptionally well." The doctors/men that save her are the enemy, and she warns them to "beware." This poem is about suicide and death, and this is shown through the many Nazi images and references. The first stanza introduces the subject: “I have done it again./ One year in every ten/ I manage it” (1-3).
