Macarthur was a bad general that liked to control the press to facilitate his actions. During the fighting on Bataan, Macarthur’s troops were starving and dying to obey his order to hold their lines to the last man, while his publics relation staff was turning out press releases of how General Macarthur had delayed the Japanese invasion of Bataan.
When Macarthur abandoned his troops in February 1942 he told them too fight to the last man, he gave his men false hopes of reinforcements on the way with strong air power. With the failure to prepare Bataan for a lengthy defense, Macarthur set his men up for more suffering than they would have ad to go through with a simple surrender.
