In general siblings are known to be there for each other, to protect each other and care for each other no matter what the circumstances. In the novel All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque the relationship between Paul and his fellow comrades were like that of brothers. This is evident when Paul reached out to Detering and tried to protect him, it is also evident through the amount of dedication Paul showed towards Kemmerich when he was in a time of need and through Paul’s willpower too help Kat and Albert stay alive while risking his own life. Paul gets out of the bed when he sees Detering packing all of his belongings. Paul went out of his way to find out what Detering was up to. When Paul questioned Detering about his motive, Detering stated that he was not doing anything out of the ordinary. However Paul did not stop there, instead he decided to ask Detering for a cigarette. Detering gave him one without any hassle.
