Stem Cell Research Stem cell research is a cutting edge scientific field in the present day world that some believe holds the future for medical advances. It has shown great promise, but it is possibly the most controversial scientific issue today. Stem cells are derived from human embryos, which many people, including the Catholic Church and pro-life organizations, believe to be a human life. They believe destroying these embryos is a type of murder and it disrespects our gift of life. On the other side of the dispute, people believe that this research has the potential of saving millions of lives and that embryo’s are merely a bunch of cells, not yet the beginning of a human life. This controversy is probably the hottest scientific topic in our present world. A stem cell is essentially a blank cell that has the ability to develop into nearly any cell in the human body. Different types of stem cells that have unique possibilities for future development are taken from an embryo at different stages. Stem cells obtained from a fertilized egg, the earliest stage of human development, are considered totipotent, meaning that their potential is total, and they can give rise to all the different types of cells in the body. Pluripotent stem cells are taken from the inner cell mass of a blastocyst, which develops around the fourth day.
