OCCUPATIONAL RESEARCH REPORT Interior Designer Rosemary Yu Nov 29, 2003 Due Date: Dec 5, 2003 OCCUPATIONAL RESEARCH REPORT Interior Designer Purpose The purpose of the Occupational Research Report is to find more information relating to an occupation that I may pursue in the future and to learn what is involved in achieving a position in this field. I chose the occupation of Interior Designer (NOC# 5242) in my selection because I have my own creative ideas about design and styles and understand technical drawings and diagrams. I also like learning new hands-on skills and I¡¯m good at deciding on the efficient use of resources (e.g. materials, finance and people). Nature of Work Interior decorators dedicate themselves to creating beautiful indoor spaces. They are experts in dealing with elements such as colour, texture, shape and size, and they use this knowledge to recreate home and work environments. Interior designers are often hired by people who want to redo their living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms or bathrooms, but that¡¯s not all they do. They might work on designing for homes, offices, hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, retail stores, or institutions. Restaurants, banks, business offices and doctors¡¯ offices are other examples of spaces interior designers work with. Even automobile and aircraft manufacturers make use of designers' skills to make the most of limited spaces. Interior designers start by drawing what the room will look like once the proposed changes are made. These changes can include anything from rearranging the furniture to total renovation (changing floors, walls, ceilings and everything in between). Interior designers also budget and choose the paint, wallpaper, carpeting, furniture and other materials that are used.
