Hordes of barbarians invaded the civilized state, destroying the old Roman Empire. But only one force prevented this: the church. The Church not only survived, but converted and civilized the barbarians. It faced the challenge of converting barbarians who are uncivilized. With God’s ever-watchful providence, it brought about the conversion of many barbarians. ... In introducing Christianity to the barbarians, the church began what the barbarians know or understand.
