In my opinion the reason why Forster´s male characters have troubles coping with their own feelings while female characters are more open minded, helpful and generous, has probably roots in the models of families in which Forster grew up. His father´s family was evangelic with a deep sense for moral responsibility; on the contrary his mother and her relatives were more liberal and open.
