In A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry presents two characters to represent different views of how blacks at the time viewed their African heritage. These two characters are Beneatha Younger and Joseph Asagai. In the play the two are in a serious relationship. Beneatha is a young adult attending college in hopes of becoming a doctor. She believes that knowing her African heritage is an important aspect of her life and she believes these things can be learned without moving to Africa. She hopes to learn many things about her African heritage from Asagai. Unlike Beneatha, Asagai believes that in the back to Africa movement.
