Ever since the first telescope was built there has been a continuous trend to build larger and more powerful telescopes. ... Keck Observatory, which used unique technological innovations in the building of the Keck telescope which is the latest step in this historical trend.
The Keck Telescopes unique mirror, composed of 36 hexagonal segments, will make it the worlds largest optical and infrared telescope. It will possess a device equal to a single mirror 10 m wide, essentially doubling the size and quadrupling the observing power of any telescope now operating.
The reason for building a large mirror for a Keck telescope is to maximize the its light-gathering power, thereby allowing astronomers to study extremely faint objects in outer space, and to study objects with high angular resolution.
