Grassic Gibbon believed that mankind had lived at one with the land in a Golden Age before the coming of civilisation and its crippling influence.
How far would you say this theory has been woven into the narrative, characterisation and themes of “Sunset Song”?
Lewis Grassic Gibbon portrays his views of an every changing society in Scotland which allows the reader to follow the day by day changes through the eyes of the central character, Chris Guthrie. The novel “Sunset Song” has many personal touches with the memories and also the authors own ideals which make the novel truly touching and allows readers of any age to associate with one, or some, of the other characters. I feel as though a could walk along aside Chris Guthrie in her life and also be apart of it with the outstanding use of characterisation and themes, also narrative plays a major part in the lay out of the novel and in the analysis of “Sunset Song” I shall be focussing in these areas intensely. ... These two gentlemen play a very special part throughout the novel along with being main characters and being very good and close friends of Chris Guthrie and family, they also hold the personal opinion of Grassic Gibbon when it comes to religious beliefs Long Rob is the one to put his beliefs with the comment;
“If Christ came down to Kinraddie he’d be welcome enough to a bit meat or milk at the mill but damn the thing he’d get at the manse”
Shows that Long Rob holds no true feelings for religion.
