Poe was very familiar with death; many people he cared for died of tuberculosis. When Poe was just one year old, his father became ill with tuberculosis and left the family to die, so that his family would not have to witness his suffering. ... Little Edgar had to watch his mother lying sick in a small damp room for public view when she was just twenty-four years old. ... ” Nearly every person Poe came to love died at a young age from phthisis. (Wright 30-35)
Poe used drugs very frequently to try to escape his problems; however, they often caused more. Poe’s drinking began when his first sweetheart, Elmira, took another suitor. Poe lived with his aunt and cousin later in his life, but they were very poor, so he entered a short story contest, for which he took opium to stay awake during the night to write. Poe became a famous journalist and critic, but the monotony of the job caused him to drink. ... One day, on his way to a lecture, Poe disappeared for five days, and when he returned, he was rushed to the hospital. ... Though he was hired into very outstanding and respectable jobs, Poe’s drinking always resulting to being fired. (Wright 30-35)
One of Poe’s most famous and gothic short stories is “The Fall of the House of Usher.” The story reflects Poe’s life as bad dream; he felt like he lived in a drowsy state where he had no control over his life.
