False Pretenses The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is a play written by William Shakespeare, that takes place in 66 B.C. The dictator of Rome, Julius Caesar, has a very reliable and dear friend, Mark Antony. After Caesar is killed, Antony rebels against the conspirators. Two of which are Caius Cassius and Marcus Brutus. Cassius is a very deceitful man, who deceives Brutus into thinking that killing Caesar would be the best thing for Rome, but is actually out of his own jealousy. This is where we see Shakespeare demonstrating that things are not as they seem. Mark Antony’s vengeance is just a masquerade for his longing for power. He seems like a follower throughout the beginning of the play, but as soon as he finds out about Caesars death, he immediately takes on the role as a czar.
