The new wonder drug for education reform seems to be the school uniform. Baggy jeans, rock band T-shirts, and baseball caps no longer adorn the hallways of middle schools in Long Beach, California. In place of the customary jeans and sweatshirts, all students are now clad in school uniforms. School officials in Long Beach are proud to admit that levels of violence and student insubordination have dropped by over fifty percent since the initiation of their mandatory school uniforms. This example has been the stepping stone for schools across the country who wish to instigate a uniform policy of their own. Many schools are striving to achieve these percentages in their district. However, school officials in Long Beach, California neglected to mention a few things. At the same time that Long Beach declared school uniforms mandatory in all elementary and middle schools in the district, they also began a few new programs that placed more teachers in the hallways between classes and offered more adult supervision for the children.
