... Citizens of the southern states believed that the election of Lincoln was a mandate for the abolition of slavery in all of the territories. Southerners believed that because Lincoln supported tariffs, free soil, and manufacturing then his election would lead to the extinction of slavery and eventually the downfall of the south. Lincoln was a moderate abolitionist so he did want to abolish slavery, but his primary goal, if elected president, was to preserve the union. Lincoln was willing to let slavery continue if it meant that the southern states would not secede and the union would be maintained, so to some extent Lincoln was not elected just so that he would end slavery. ...
