AMERICA TAKES ONE FOR THE TEAM
review of “Deep Impact”, currently playing at the Towne Cinema
by Ken Titterington
The release of “Deep Impact” last week marked the unofficial start to the summer movie blockbuster season which along with the Boys of Summer in the ball parks, tend to define life in North America this time of the year. However, judging by the roster Hollywood is offering, this is one of the few heavy-hitters (along with “Godzilla”, “X-Files” and “Armageddon”) so you better get your thrills while you can.
You would think with the huge success of Titanic, we would be awash in special-effects extravaganzas, but remember that it takes at least one year for a film to emerge from concept to screen, so expect a tidal wave of movies attempting to sink the big one next summer. ...
The problem with “Deep Impact” is that all of the characters are admirable and courageous; everyone seems to have an American flag tattooed to their heart, even the Russian cosmonaut who learns that sometimes it is better to sacrifice an individual than to risk the safety of the team.
