A Reflective Essay Introduction The beginning of any written piece, when writing about oneself, is to lay in front of yourself why this piece is to be written. I need to establish a goal, or an aim to the essay. My aim is to identify and describe a teaching/-learning event that involved myself as the teacher. From my own learning style I tend to follow a structured thought path of; the description of an event, how I felt and what I was thinking as it was going through, the positive and negative aspects of that event, what were my reflections after the event on what else could have been done and then finally, if the circumstance happened again how would I approach it or react to it. My influence is the process that has been explained at large by the reflective cycle presented by Gibbs, 1988. (Appendix 1) Description of an Event I am a full time Beauty Therapy lecturer and am involved with several groups of learners who are at different levels on the NVQ Beauty Therapy courses. The event I will describe centres around my own tutor group. A year one NVQ level 2 Beauty Therapy group. These learners started their course in September 2003 and are still requiring a lot of input for their skills. This group consists of 17 learners who are in the 16 – 18 year old bracket. The majority of the group is female, although there is one male member. The learners all come from different feeder schools from around the Eastleigh College area. The practical session I have with group follows a lunch and free study period and it lasts for 3 hours. The topic for the session was day make up application techniques and required the students to observe a demonstration, taking notes, question and answer about colours and fashions and then to carry out their own practical application. My lesson plan had been set, so I explained to the group how the session was going to run, also setting the aims and objectives to them.
