'The cinema is about appearance, but stardom is a matter of consistent appearance, the same person and personality must turn up'. Discuss the performance of a Hollywood star of your choice, from any period, relating aspects of their star persona to their films. Include detailed analyses of at least two of their roles. The star that I have chosen to study for the purpose of this essay is Susan Sarandon. Recently being honoured as an outstanding actress in Film Comment March 2003 Sarandon has continued to impress cinema audiences with her performances in films such as The Client, Thelma and Louise and The Witches of Eastwick. Her roles are typically those of strong women and as Sarandon herself states: ‘In terms of my parts I chose from what was offered to me, I don’t know what complicated, strong twenty year old parts there were that I didn’t get in those days.’ (Empire November 1994.) Sarandons star persona is that of an independent family woman who has developed as her life has changed. Interview magazine labelled Sarandon ‘an ex-hippie. A proud American. A cult movie star. A mainstream movie star. A sex symbol with the aura of a neighbourhood goddess.’ (Interview October 1994.) Her star persona is as diverse as her roles and while she is typically cast as a strong woman, this role sees her in many different occupations. The films that I have chosen to study Sarandons performances in are Thelma and Louise, The Client, Dead Man Walking and Anywhere But Here. The reason for this choice is that the roles that Sarandon plays place her in varying occupations. As a mother, best friend, lawyer and a nun and in order to discuss the idea that ‘the same person and personality must turn up' in cinema it is important that a range of roles are studied. While the characters differ in several ways, Sarandon brings familiar aspect of her persona to each .
