Local Hero & Trainspotting
Neither film explores Scottish identity as an ongoing theme through the whole of the narrative. However, Trainspotting does consider these concepts more explicitly.
Local Hero explores Scotland as a rural place.
Trainspotting considers an essentially urban Scotland placed in juxtaposition with the rural.
Urban and Rural
Local Hero in many ways perpetuates the ‘shortbread and tartan’ myth or ‘tartanry’ of Scotland. (Braveheart)
Trainspotting puts forward more of a ‘Clydeist’ urban myth of Scotland alongside other films such as ‘The Ratcatcher’ and ‘Smallfaces’
Both films challenge these stereotypes of a naïve and innocent rural Scotland or a desperate and pessimistic urban Scotland.
