kenneth rexroth

Kenneth Rexroth, an influential poet of the beat generation, was born in South Bend, Indiana on December 22, 1905. Born into a family of freethinkers he was encouraged by his parents, Charles Rexroth and Delia Reed, to explore his intellectual and artistic impulses, and at the same time develop a working sense of responsibility for humankind. ... Although Rexroth never received his high school diploma and only had five years of formal schooling he was an avid reader of poetry, philosophy and political theory and taught himself several different languages.

Sadly at the age of twelve Rexroth was orphaned. ...

Within Rexroth’s poetry lies both inspiration from the time period in which he lived and the events in his life. For example, Rexroth’s personal affairs were often turbulent. ... Walt Whitman also served as a major source of influence to Rexroth because they both did not write poetry similar to poetry of their time periods.
