Commercial whaling during the last century decimated most of the worlds whale
populations. Estimates suggest that between 1925, when the first whaling factory ship was introduced, and 1975, more than 1. ... After repeated requests from the world community, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) agreed to a halt on commercial whaling that came into effect in 1986. Now we are about to witness a return to large scale commercial whaling. Nations such as Norway and Japan continues its commercial whaling programmes, openly flouting the IWCs regulations. In the past years, both nations have increased the resources they devote to their whaling programmes, and both are aggressively pushing to lift the ban on commercial whaling. Overturning the ban on whaling would be devastating to the worlds whales, which are just beginning to recover from years of exploitation. ... In order to save these animals we have to make sure that there are laws and regulations against commercial whaling or there might not be any whales left for coming generations to adore. ... Ideally, most of the whales will strand far enough up on shore that it is unnecessary to secure them. ...
Breaking the rules
For a long time people has tried to put a stop to whaling, in 1986 the International Whaling Commission finally agreed and put commercial whaling to a halt.
