Creating a Salutary Learning Atmosphere in Class (LAC)
It is commonly agreed abroad that the effect of teaching and learning is to a great extent decided by the learning atmosphere in class (LAC). However, in China, most teachers seem that not paying enough attention to it or not knowing how to create a salutary learning in class, which seriously affected their teaching outcome. ...
Chapter One Notion of LAC
The effect of teaching is decided not only by the way teachers teach or the way students learn but also by certain surroundings, which materially consists of the layout and decoration of classroom and which psychologically is the learning atmosphere in class (LAC). ... Different LAC will certainly lead to different outcome. Therefore, of these two factors, LAC is more important.
LAC is formed through teacher-student interaction in the process of teaching, decided by the common attitude of the majority of students and the prevailing psychological state. It is the psychological background on which learning activities in class is based. Active and salutary LAC is conducive to promoting students¡¯ enthusiasm while on the contrary inimical to the outcome of study. Once LAC is formed, it is relatively stable and will last for some long time.
Chapter Two Necessities of Creating Favorable LAC
The Attitude-Balance Theory of a psychologist Hyde is quite inspirational for teachers to stimulate students¡¯ zest for study. ... Likewise, under the presupposition that the teacher is sure that his lessons are instructive and beneficial, students tend to bifurcate when trying to strike a cognitive balance between ¡°Class atmosphere¡± and Subject under learning---- One is that in favorable atmosphere students are likely to have positive feeling to the subject taught in the class. ... Therefore, if a teacher can pay attention to the feelings of students, strengthen the teacher-student communication and finally create favorable LAC, most students can study in positive, salutary mood, which will realize the remarkable improvement of teaching effect.
Personally, I think that LAC has influence on at least four aspects of teaching:
1 Favorable LAC is be propitious to stimulating the motivation of study. ... In a class in which every student fell that he is respected and credited, students become more self-respected, more confident in his ability therefore more eager to take part in the teaching activities. Thus, students are highly motivated to learn more and to ameliorate their roles in the class¡ªnamely from an onlooker to a participant. ... In favorable LAC, study itself is an important source of interest. ...
2 In favorable LAC, students have a sense of security, which leads their bodies and minds open to ¡°experience¡± thus reduce the negative effect of the feeling filter to the least. ... There tends to be less affective filters if one is interested in the objects he is learning, and Vice Versa. ...
3 Favorable LAC encourages extroversion and enterprising, especially in foreign language teaching. ... In favorable LAC, free from the worries of punishment from the teacher and jeers from their classmates, students are courageous to take part in teaching activities, which will improve the efficiency of teaching. ... Textbooks on foreign languages are emotion-bound, therefore if they are studied in a proper LAC, they are more effective in teaching activities.
From above, we can get a conclusion that favorable LAC is not only helpful but also necessary in effective teaching activities.
Chapter Three Type of LAC
LAC is a kind of comprehensive psychological state, which consists of perception, attention, thinking, mood, will and set (or stereotype). A Chinese scholar Huang Xiulan classified LAC into three types, namely active, passive and opponent, illustrated by the following charter.
Active LAC is an organic unification of tranquil and activeness, enthusiasm and reservation, relaxation and discipline. That is to say, the class is in order, students¡¯ attention concentrated on what are being taught and their minds at the top gear. ... In such a class, students not only think carefully and actively while pricking up their ears to their fellow students and the teacher.
