Caesar was assigned a 5 year command of the armies in Gaul, but while he was in Gaul, the senate tried to persuade Pompey to side with them instead of the triumvirate. Hearing this caused Caesar to come home and divide up the surrounding territory; Spain to Pompey, Gaul to Caesar, and Syria to Crassus. While in Syria, Crassus was killed, leaving a power struggle between Pompey and Caesar. After Caesar’s 5 years in Gaul were up, the Roman senate forced him to come home. ...
