... going to be daddy's little girl. I have a younger sister who is about ten years younger than me and she could get away with anything, because my dad is always going to protect her, especially when my mom gets mad at her, and here comes dad to the rescue. It actually got to the point where my sister was getting in trouble, and she knew it would be ok because my dad was home. I feel like I was closer to my mother, and my sister was closer to my dad. Even though Ellen was the oldest of the three children, she was the only girl, and Brian and Jeffery were actually closer to their mother. When Brian wasn’t doing so well in school, his mother was there to support him. When Mrs. Gulden first becomes ill and Mr. Gulden asks Ellen to come home to take care of her mother because she will be too week because of the chemotherapy , I feel that she didn't want to and that Ellen’s career as a writer was more important to her at that time than her mother. I like the way Anna Quindlen takes a stab at New York when she talks about Ellen asking Mr. Tweedy for time off to take care of her mother. Mr. Tweedy says, "How about if I gave you a promotion"(Quindlen, 28)? Ellen replies in disbelief "Mr. Tweedy, do you honestly think someone would come in and say their mother was dying of cancer to get a raise"(Quindlen, 28)? Mr. Tweedy replies "Ellen, this is New York" (Quinn Len, 28). Ellen came from a small neighborhood, her father was a teacher and her mother a home maker, but she moved to New York and was constantly on the go. New York was where Ellen belonged and she pretty much lived a stressful life style. The book continuously shows how Ellen had to suffer trying to balance, keeping her job and taking care of her mom. When Ellen comes home to watch over her mother, was she in for a surprise. First, her mother didn’t even know that she was coming and second Ellen was more to help keep her fathers life moving smoothly. Mr. Gulden was the bread winner and had a very successful carrier being a professor. He didn’t want to accept the thought that energetic woman that he has loved and who is the one that has kept the family together was sick and as the book points out with every season change that the mother is getting closer to death. I would like to talk about the Double ABCX Model and talk how this family is under a very stressful situation. I think that Ellen was able to handle the stress better than her father because she is from New York and has to deal with stress on a day to day bases. Ellen who was at the peak of her career had to find a way to come back home and take care of her mother, and still take care of her job. The Event here is that the mother has cancer and she needs to be taken care of. The mother doesn’t want to show Ellen that she needs help and tries her hardest to hide her pain when Ellen in around. All of the stress is put on Ellen, the father uses his job to escape the idea that his wife has cancer, and Ellen is all of a sudden thrown into the roll of being the one that keeps the family running. When Ellen first comes home and is hanging out with her mother, she is so unhappy because, she didn’t want to live her mother’s life and there she was. When her mother had her hanging out with the Minnie’s; I feel that if she could have went back to New York and find somebody else to take care of her mother, she would of in a heart beet. Then all of a sudden Ellen gets her priorities in the right place. She realizes that her mother is dieing and she needs to be there for her. After New Years her mother is suffering to the point where they can’t even bear to see the woman they love in so much pain. It gets to the po...
