Summary of Ellen Goodman’s article “Thanksgiving”
...oneliness. The individualism is both exciting and cruel. The family, on the other hand, stands for safety, partnership and love but not without intrusiveness and burdens. The author does not try to make a choice between the “I” and the “We”, she believes that they balance each other. Author’s opinion is that we all try to be very independent and individual, but at the same time we need to have some one who, no matter what, will care for us. She notes that in the world we always have to fight for the survival, while the family promises protect us and care for us only because we are a part of it.
