...man on one of her items. The woman gets mad and starts to complain, and Sammy fixes the mistake, but it took a while to calm the woman down. Had Sammy been paying attention to what he was doing instead of mentally describing the girls, it would never have happened. One of the girls he describes as being the "chunky one", wearing a two-piece plaid bathing suit. Sammy says she is a "chunky kid with a sweet broad looking can" (Updike, 90). In other words, he is saying she has a sweet-looking butt. He also comments that her stomach looks pale, so he is assuming that the bathing suit is new. The second girl who he calls the tall girl is described as having the sunburn under the eyes and a chin that is too long. She is said to be the kind of girl that other girls think are, "striking and attractive" (90). The other girls hang out with her because they know she will never be any competition for them.
