...real controversy over subliminal advertising or messages was in movie theaters. During the movies and the intermission before and between movies, the theaters would be flashing very quickly “Get a drink”, or a picture of popcorn. They would do this so quickly that the naked eye wouldn’t notice it, but your subconscious would. This would make you want to go the snack bar and get a snack. In this event, the ads worked because you would be spending money, or you might otherwise have not. People were appalled when they heard this. And the movie theaters were force to stop this practice. Thus, we now have the dancing popcorn, candy,, and soda before and after the show. Nowadays, Disney is one of the main companies that is for subliminal messages. Many religious groups including “American Family Association” (Svetky 42) and “American Life League (ALL)” (Emery 16). They both have the same complaint that they are explicit sexual messages hidden in Disney cartoons; The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and the Lion King. Disney claims these are the allegations that come from overactive imaginations (Emery 17). In fact, any Discerning Viewer, who examined the film Little Mermaid is looking for the Ministers erection, instead they saw a knobby knee that was clearly visible when the scene appeared form another angle (Emery 18). If they fast forwarded the Lion King to the spot where young Simba has a cloud of dust appear over him, they would have a hard time making out the word SEX (Emery 18). And instead of hearing Aladdin whisper “Good teenagers, take their clothes”. Among other voices in the balcony scene, they probably would have heard him whisper to Princess Jasmine’s pet tiger, “Scat good tiger, take off and go” (Emery 18). Other supposed messages include the Lion Kings salute to Hitler when the hyenas march past Scar and turn their heads and salute much like the Nazis did for Hitler. Or will people be saying Disney is stating subliminally that bigamy is okay since there is obviously only one male Lion. Who knows what will come next? Even Microsoft is under attack.
