Although Blanche drinks frequently, she declares that she seldom indulges. Blanche does not feel that is socially acceptable for a women to drink frequently and is aware that she does, so she attempts to create the illusion of being a non drinker. Blanche feels the need to create illusions in order to deal with the realities of her life. Throughout the play, Blanche tries to create the illusion that she is wealthy and has no trouble with money. The reality is that she has no money, due to the fact that she was forced to leave her job and the town where she lived, this is why she travels to New Orleans to live with her sister. Blanche is constantly flaunting her jewelry and flashy clothing while living in Stanley and Stellas apartment. Blanche feels that if she appears to have money and lavish possessions that she will be thought of more highly by her sister and brother in law. Blanche is ashamed of the fact that she was forced to leave her job and as a result has no money or valuables of great worth, and this is her way of dealing with the harsh fact that she has no money due to mistakes she has made in her past. As a result of having close to no money, Blanche becomes obsessed with the idea of being wealthy and living that lifestyle: " We are going to pretend that this is a little artists café on the left bank in Paris!" ( page 63). The discrepancy of Blanche’s infatuation with money originates from the reality that she no longer has any. Blanche is extremely consumed in the way that she looks because she feels that it is one of the only things that she has going for her. Blanche constantly fishes for compliments from anyone willing to bestow them upon her and these compliments allow her to feel satisfied with herself, this parallels Blanche’s obsession with being desirable: " Would you think ...
