...ble chair, and just stared at patches of clouds thru the opened window. All she could say was “’free, free, free!’”(pg 74). Those words would not come out of a mouth that is sad. Brently’s friend didn’t even know that they had such a bad marriage. “She had loved him-sometimes. Often she had not.”(pg. 74) Pretending must have been something Louise had gotten good at over the years. While in the room, she had enough time to think about everything that has happened. She thought about Brently, how she would weep when she would see him in his casket but she knew how to see “beyond that bitter moment a long procession of years to come that would belong to her absolutely. And she opened and spread her arms out to them in welcome.”(pg. 74) She also thought about how just yesterday she shuddered while thinking life would be long, but now said a quick prayer that life might be long. Meanwhile, Richards and Josephine are downstairs still not able to stomach what just happened to Brently, and Mrs. Mallard is thinking about her life as Ms. Ballard. Her sister came up to bring her downstairs so that Louise isn’t by herself during this “difficult” time in her life. As they are coming down the stairs, someone was coming thru the front door. It was Brently, who didn’t even know about the train crash and was far from it. Richards tried to hide him, but Louise’s heart condition got the best of her. The doctors said “she had died of heart disease-of joy that kills.”(pg. 75) Joy wasn’t what killed Louise. The doctors assumed seeing her husband, that she had thought was dead, brought so much joy and sunshine back into her world that her heart couldn’t handle it. It wasn’t joy that killed her, it was her new world crashing down on her. The new world that she made in her head while...
