Stopping by Woods annotated
...he American Tragedy: people being consumed by work, always trying to do what pleases society, and not wanting people to question one’s actions. The speaker can never really stop by the woods because he is so worried about what people would think about him not working. The use of the word “queer” in the poem also suggests that the speaker is odd for stopping to look at the woods or that he is unmanly, it could be either one. A man should not have these emotions. Frank also discusses the use of the horse to represent people by making noise as if to get the speaker to keep moving. The conclusion is that the speaker wanted to appreciate the woods but could not because of the pressures society puts on people. I will use this article to discuss the impact society had on people’s actions in Frost’s times. I will also use this article to compare society then and now. In this article, Mr. Harrison discusses Frost’s use of different poetic devices to get the reader to slow down while reading the poem. Harrison talks about the use of diphthongs, two vowels at a time, and fricatives, another sound that adds length to words. Frost uses all of these sounds at once in the third stanza to really let the reader “feel” what the speaker is feeling. Harrison also mentions Frost’s use of alliteration. The conclusion is that some poets use devices that are easily recognized by the average reader and some that can only be found by certain specialists. I will use this article to show how Frost used certain poetic devices that the average reader could pick out and understand. Mack, Anne. “Marxism, Romanticism, and Postmodernism.” South Atlantic Quarterly 88.3 (Fall 1989): 627-30. This article discusses other possible meanings that could be found in the introduction of “Stopping by Woods.” The author of the article thinks that there are other meanings in the title and the opening passage. She asks if the “Woods” are a family or trees. Also, it is suggested that “Though” is the name of the village. The words “I think” and “I know” are...
