...reading this out loud all that one could think is what happens next? As I carried on reading the doctor goes on to tell the reader that he kept the baby warm but then eight hours later the baby dies. At this stage, one may wonder why I came to such conclusions about the doctor not telling the truth. I hope I will make it clear when describing what the Boiler man went through. When first reading the boiler mans view I found it hard to take his statement seriously due to his use of colloquial language but the after I got to terms with his language, what he was saying started to evoke my sympathy towards him. The boiler man had obviously gone through something very traumatic and disturbing. The boiler man was all ready to throw the bag with the baby into the fire when he realised that the baby was still alive: “Anyway, ah gote the fire up, ah starts throwin bags in the incinerator, ah’m luftin this wee bag an ah hear a sorta whimperin- cryin like- an ah can feel something breathin through the paper” Initially, after just reading the doctors view one would think that he gave the baby back to the doctor, but later in the boiler mans observation it is made clear that this is not what happened: “Christ, it wis hingin ower the fire- may-be a quick death in thae degrees, but ah couldny sleep fur nights thinking aboot it, couldny sleep, an och, ah still think what’s the use, ah didny save the kiddy’s life” After reading that it is made quite clear that the baby was not returned to the doctor and one may think that the boiler man is a dreadful man for doing such a thing, but this was not the way I felt. I felt sorry for the man as he can’t forgive himself for his sins and I feel that he did not speak up about the baby merely because of his status. At this stage in my essay you may wonder how I came to think that the doctor was the liar and the boiler man was telling the truth and I think that my feelings were provoked by the back up of the porters view. Again, the porter uses colloquial language, which at times I found hard to understand but again I simply put that to the back of my mind and concentrated on what happened in his side of the story. The porter tells us that he also noticed that the baby was alive and just gave it to the boiler man. I do not feel as sympathetic for the porter as I do for the boiler man as the porter did not need to do anything with the baby just quite simply hand it to the boiler man. I feel that the porters view has established that the baby did not go back to the doctor. I now wish to discuss the parents view on what happened. The first and most important is the mothers view; she is quite obviously distraught about the whole ...
