People could be transported to where ever they wanted to go in a fraction of what it would usually take. It made a huge contribution in the growth of cities and the spread of people through out the country. It helped growth away from rivers and main water supplies. The invention was also used for pumping water. The steam engine provided inventors with a base to spark new ideas off of. With the new invention they were able to transport their goods and people faster. There wasn't really any negative impact from this invention.
