Star Wars
...e is later in a vision of Ben in Star Wars-Empire Strikes Back told of another master. A master Yoda, inhabitant of the Dagobah System, who was master to Obey-One and would become Luke’s new master in training. In Star Wars-Empire Strikes Back, Luke journeys to the Dagobah System to find Master Yoda and become his apprentice, and finish his training as a Jedi. As a test in Luke’s training we come across the seventh archetypal step, “Fighting the Monster”, in this case Darth Vader. As a test of Luke’s abilities, Yoda sends Luke into a cave to see what he will find. There he meets a vision of Darth Vader, here he fails and gives into his hate, drawing his light saber and striking Darth Vader down. His Jedi training is not complete, and he is still destined to fight the real Darth Vader, and if he gives in to the dark side he will become evil. Luke leaves Yoda to save the lives of his friends, unaware that he is falling into a trap of Lord Vader’s. Here his skills will be fully tested as he fights the real Darth Vader. While waiting for Luke’s arrival, Han Solo is put into carbonate hibernation to be taken to Jabba the Hutt by the Bounty Hunter Bubba Fett. Succeeding in not giving in to hate while fighting Darth Vader, Luke finds that Vader is his father, and is opened up to all new feelings and possibilities. During the fight Luke loses his right hand by Darth Vader, the same hand that Luke will cut off of Darth Vader in the Sixth Episode-Return of the Jedi. The symbolism here is that Darth Vader is made of mostly machine and now Luke has a mechanical hand, same as his father. The beginning of his pathway is looking like that of the beginning of his fathers, only time will tell if he will take the right path or whether he will join the Dark Side and become the Emperors new right hand man. In Star Wars-Return of the Jedi Luke has become more powerful with his training as a Jedi. We begin the adventure at Jabba the Hutt’s Palace where Han Solo is frozen in carbonate. R2-D2 and C-3P0 are sent to deliver a message by Luke and become Jabba’s servants, only in an elaborate plan to destroy Jabba and save Han. As the movie progresses a bounty hunter brings in Chewbacca who is then sent to a holding cell. We later find that the bounty hunter is Princess Leia, there to rescue Han. On trying to rescue Han, Leia is found out and taken prisoner by Jabba. Here we come across the Virgin/Whore complex as seen in Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce. When we first meet Leia in Episode Four-A New Hope she is dressed all in white fully clothed. By Episode Six-Return of the Jedi she is dressed in a revealing outfit, otherwise looked upon as “whorish.” On the arrival of Luke, Jabba is defeated and Han is restored to normal. Leaving his friends, Luke returns to the Dagobah System to finish his training with Master Yoda. While he has been gone, Yoda has grown weak and is on the verge of death when Luke arrives. He tells Luke that there is another Skywalker and that he still must face Vader again to complete his Jedi training. When returning to his ship, Ben Kenobi appears and speaks to Luke of his destiny against Vader. Luke asks him who the other Skywalker is, and finds it in himself that it is Leia. This is the eighth step of the archetypal hero, the Soul-Mate or “femme fatale.” Luke’s soul mate is his twin sister Leia, whom he was separated from at birth to protect both of them from their father and the Emperor. While Luke has been gone the Rebel alliance has acquired information of the weakness of the new Death Star. In order to defeat the Empire and destroy the Death Star, Han, Chewy, R2-D2, C-3P0, Princess Leia, and Luke must all travel to a planet that harbors the control building for the Death Star’s shield. On the arrival of the planet there is a high speed chase and Leia is lost, only to be discovered by the planets small, fuzzy inhabitants the Ewoks. She is taken to their village in the trees where she is joined later by the rest of the gang. In order for them to help the Rebel’s they must act quickly and disarm the Death Star’s reflector shield. Luke realizes what he must do and goes to find Vader to face him for the last time, in order to see whether he can turn his father back from the Dark Side of the Force. He tells Leia of his troubles and his secret of how Vader is his father, and that he has a twin sister. On doing this Luke has become esteemed as very powerful, he is a great leader, and the only powerful Jedi left in the galaxy. In this way we come to step nine in the archetypal hero stage. Luke has reached a “King-like” position; he is the most powerful being on the good side. While Luke is ...
