... Male sport also receives far more sponsorship dollars than female sport. However, the most powerful way that sport perpetuates our patriarchal society is how the media report sport. The medias reporting of sport contributes to many ways to Australia’s patriarchal society. The most obvious way is the fact that very little female sport is reported about in the media resulting in little interest being developed by the population of Australia. This point is clearly backed up by Smith (1999; Pg67) when he states “Very little media time or space is devoted to women’s sport making it virtually impossible for them to get a shoe into the lucrative sports entertainment business”. This situation has much flow on effects such as being unable to attract sponsors to their games, nor spectators to the venues. Ultimately a situation like a dog chasing its tail is developed.
