There are several routes that take you over the Cascade Mountains; the smaller roads offer better scenery. Mt. Baker, Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Hood tower above the rest of the mountains. Mt St. Helens is a volcano and in 1981 Mt. St. Helens erupted, spreading ash across the State of Washington and further east. Today you can hike to Mt. St. Helens and still see the effects of the eruption of the volcano. SEATTLE, TACOMA & OLYMPIA: The state capital of Washington is Olympia and is located on the Puget Sound south of Tacoma and Seattle. A family could spend a lot of time in these towns and never run out of things to do. Both Seattle and Tacoma offer zoos. Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle has just about any type of animal you would want to see. The zoo in Tacoma has more water animals, Polar Bears, Seals, Sea Otters and Penguins. Tacoma’s zoo also has botanical gardens to walk through. The “water front” in Seattle has an under water zoo! This is really cool; you can walk right under a shark or string ray! Pioneer Square is located in downtown Seattle and you can tour the old under ground city. If you take this tour, watch for the “elevator toilet”! You have to climb up stairs to use this toilet.
