Defensive driving is driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others. The everyday person needs to be a safe driver, not just because it is the right way to drive. It can cost quiet a lot of money if you are involved in a wreck. There are three main ways you can prevent a crash. Recognize the hazard; scan ahead, around and behind your vehicle. Look behind around and into what you are driving. A person should look in their mirrors every 3 - 5 seconds. Understand the defense; know what to do to avoid a traffic hazard. Know the consequences of the driving choices you make. Know the basic defenses. Develop effective scanning patterns such as slowing down. Use a safe following distance. Act correctly, in time. Drivers should be alert and concentrating on the driving task. Many drivers probably know the correct evasive maneuvers necessary to avoid a crash, but they may not be paying attention and therefore lose response time. Other drivers may act in time, but they may act incorrectly. Especially new drivers, they have very little experience, so this gives them a greater risk at having a wreck. When there is a wreck, there are three different crashes that are involved. The first part of the crash, the vehicle crash, causes the car to buckle and bend as it hits something and comes to an abrupt stop. This occurs in approximately one-then of a second. The crushing of the front end absorbs some of the force of the crash and cushions the rest of the car. As a result, the passenger compartment comes to a more gradual stop than the front of the car. The second part of the crash occurs as the vehicle’s occupants hit some part of the vehicle. At the moment of impact, unbelted occupants are still traveling at the vehicle’s original speed. Just after the vehicle comes to a complete stop, these unbelted occupants will slam into the steering wheel, the windshield or some other part of the vehicle interior. This is the human crash. Another form of human crash is the person-to-person. Unbelted occupants colliding with each other cause many serious injuries. In a crash, occupants tend to move toward the point of impact, not away from it. Unbelted rear-seat passengers often become high-speed projectiles, striking the people in the front seat. Even after the occupant’s body comes to a complete stop, his or her internal organs are still moving forward. Suddenly, these organs hit other organs or the skeletal system.
