...hrough description. It includes three modes of proof : pathos, logos, and ethos, and five canons: invention, arrangement, style, delivery, and memory. The modes of proof are persuasion techniques used in a speech. Pathos, or emotion, was considered to be a weak persuasion technique and was not to be used as a primary argument. Logos, or logic, was considered to be the strongest technique and should compose the majority of a speech. Ethos was the establishment of a speaker’s credibility. This is the most crucial part of a speech and it is necessary for a speaker to establish his credibility in order to be taken seriously. The canons are parts of style used to compose a speech. Invention is the method used to create the speech, and is usually unknown by the critic. Arrangement is the order in which the arguments in the speech are placed. Aristotle believed that an introduction, body, conclusion arrangement would be most effective. Delivery is the way in which the speech is given. This includes tone, expression, gestures, etc..
