The company has designed and built some of the best and most powerful communications and remote sensing satellites of the time and their most famous design ever was the now famous and very well known Canadarm. It was first launched into space on November 13, 1981 as a part of the famous Columbia. The Canadarm was modeled after a real human arm so it could do all the things an astronaut could do with more power and a lot less worry about danger to the astronauts. It was built in Toronto, Ontario. The canadarm has traveled over 175 million miles which is about the length to the sun and back from earth, it has been around orbit 6,500 times and has been in space for over 15 months. After the first 50 flights of the canadarm has exceeded the expectations of the U.S. space program and will continue to in further years. By the beginning of 2000 SPAR had exited the space and communications business and was solely interested in the aviation services business.
